Women’s hands are the best haven for microbes

American researchers claim that hands of women populate a greater number of different types of bacteria, than men. Besides, their research shows that in general human hands have more microbes than it was believed previously.
The scientists have found out that the “average” hand populates up to 150 bacteria, and the range of their species varies significantly from person to person. Researchers from Colorado University hope that their work will help to determine the ‘healthy threshold’ of bacteria content on human hands, and what types of micro - organisms can be associated with certain diseases. The study of 102 human hands revealed more than 4,700 bacteria. However, only five of them were found in all 51 participants. Moreover, even right and left palms of the same individual have only 17 percent of the matches on the types of bacteria inhabiting them. The authors of the study believe that greater diversity of bacteria on women’s hands can be associated with the fact that the reaction of men skin is more acidic, what prevents excessive reproduction of micro - organisms. It can be also explained by differences in perspiration, distribution of oil glands, hormone level and the use of certain cosmetics.
The study also shows that washing hands affects the range of bacteria only slightly. However, it is indisputable that washing hands with anti-bacterial products is an effective way of reducing risk of diseases, as it affects causative micro - organisms.
The diversity of bacteria on hands in 3 times higher than on arms, elbows in the mouth and intestines. However, it is still not known how the ratio of microbes’ species on skin can affect human health, and also whether some types of bacteria are better for health than others. Scientists have designed purple ‘anti cancer’ tomatoes

British scientists have developed a tomato working out antioxidants which help to fight cancer. Researchers from the British town Norwich have stated that the breakthrough in developing of this vegetable with the color and shape of a plum became possible through the introduction into a tomato of two genes from the snapdragon.
The deep unusual color of biotechnological tomatoes can be explained with the high content of anthocyanin - the pigment which can also be found in strawberries, strawberries, blackberries and cowberries. Unfortunately, normal tomatoes do not contain anthocyanin, while this element is believed to fight cancer and help to prevent heart diseases, as well as ageing. Thanks to its antiflammatory effect anthocyanin maintains visual acuity and prevents obesity and diabetes. Raspberries have 3,7 mg anthocyanin per gram. While we do not eat these berries every day, tomatoes are a part of our everyday menu, that is why scientists made use of the latest biotechnologies and made tomatoes work out this substance.
Such attempts have been made before, but for the first time they were crowned with success: 2.8 mg anthocyanin per gram (both in the skin and flesh of the vegetable) isn’t bad. To verify the effectiveness of the new tomato scientists have made experiments in mice with lung cancer. One group of mice was given normal food, the second - food with the addition of ‘classic’ red tomatoes, third – food with addition of the new purple vegetable. Animals from the first and second groups died from cancer in average in 142 days, and those from the “purple” group - in 182,2 days.
Of course, before such tomatoes appear in stores, scientists will have to hold a lot of additional studies. For example, it is unclear how many antioxidants a human body is able to extract from each vegetable and if the healing effect of purple tomatoes on human organism will be as significant as on mice.
